Retranscription des paroles de la vidéo: in terms of masturbation you’ve done a lot of work on this what are some of the health benefits of masturbation I mean there’s some people who accept it widely and there’s some people who think masturbation is just horrible should never be done but there are some health benefits so let’s review some of those yeah so masturbation can be healthy for us in many ways and if you look at the most common reasons people report for masturbating one of the biggest ones is stress and tension relief right so just as a form of self-care for you know dealing with or relieving stress in your life that can be one benefit we also see in the work that masturbation particularly to the point of orgasm can also help people sleep they fall asleep faster and they get better quality sleep when they masturbate before bed right and sleep is so important so vital to overall health and and function so that’s another benefit there’s also some work finding that men who ejaculate more frequently through both sex and masturbation have a lower risk of prostate cancer it it’s not cause and effect but there is that Association there so maybe it has some potential health benefits in that way there’s also some work finding that masturbation is linked to higher self-esteem in women and I think that can be explained in part by masturbation helping you to better understand your own body and what it is that brings you pleasure and that can make you more sexually confident as an individual and then there’s also some new research that we conducted at the Kinsey Institute this year in conjunction with the sexual Wellness brand womanizer where we looked at the role of masturbation in menopause symptom relief and what we found was that in a sample of menopausal women that masturbation was reported as one of the most effective techniques for reducing a wide range of menopause symptoms and it makes sense because masturbation can help you to sleep better right and so that might help in dealing with certain menopausal symptoms but also it was linked to women reporting less vaginal rophy as well so there’s also some data and other research finding that women who masturbate more who are in menopause show less vaginal atrophy over time and so there can be lots of potential health benefits there across the lifespan in terms of engaging in masturbation there was a lot of blowback from that article and I think that the important take-home is there could be benefits we’re not saying you shouldn’t get treatment for menopause in terms of hormone therapy but absolutely if you enjoy masturbation it could be a good tool to help you sleep better get more blood flow to the region and help overall in a multitude of ways I think that’s the key with masturbation or self-pleasure in general is that it could be used for a lot of disease conditions right to help with pain to help with a lot of different things but people tend to get very fixated on the morality of masturbation when and also how difficult it is to get funding I mean you guys are obviously very good at that but it is very difficult to get like funding to say hey I want to test if masturbation helps you know PCO s or or whatever the condition is you’re not going to get government funding to to do a study like that but when it comes to you know masturbation and its health benefits it can be used in conjunction with lots of other things in your life we’re not saying that masturbation is the only strategy you should use for improving your health but if you’re talking about menopausal women you can use masturbation in conjunction with hormone therapy it’s not a it’s not an either or phenomenon I just think it’s a useful tool that we can use as a form of self-care that might also have some health benefits and I realize masturbation may not be something that everybody is open to doing and you know there are various reasons why people might not be open to it and also for some people masturbation might not be as accessible you know as you get older sometimes chronic health issues disabilities can make it harder to engage in masturbation certain sex toys can become harder to operate and things like that so yeah there can certainly be challenges sometimes in terms of accessing the potential benefits of self-pleasure yeah there is however sex furniture that you can get that can help you if particularly if you’re older I’ve made a video on this I think it’s like sex after 60 but basically like you can buy certain things to help you get certain positions be able to even like we we actually have things for catheterizing so when women cize to open up the labia so you could use those you know there’s a whole host of things that you can do to help yourself if you want to right and I think that that’s you know that’s just for people who may be curious that you know if you can’t get certain positions because you have arthritis or it’s difficult or holding yourself up or whatever you know whatever position you normally do is no longer attainable to you there are ways to help yourself with that and you know that’s one of the keys to maintaining a satisfying sex life throughout your entire life is to get a little bit creative and to try some new things and sometimes the answer is buying sex Furniture you know the single most common complaint that seniors report when it comes to sex is that the old ways don’t work anymore and so you need to find new ways because your body Chang is what feels pleasurable to you changes what you desire what you fantasize about might change as well and so having an ability and openness to explore is really important but also expanding your definition of sex like sex isn’t just one thing it’s not just penetration and the older adults who are the most satisfied with their sex lives have the most expansive definition of sex they see sex as intimacy as opposed to sex as penetration yeah and apparently in the nursing homes there’s a lot of sex so and a lot of STI you know still use a condom or dental dam or something but yeah absolutely uh so you got to you got to figure out new ways new tricks so what are you working on right now that you’re excited about oh boy well I have a paper I’m working on right now that I think is really interesting it’s about people’s openness to dating and having sex with people who belong to different political parties than they do and I think it’s an important topic given that we live in this highly politically polarized time right how is this impacting the world of sex and dating and one of the interesting things I see in that research is that men regardless of their political background are much more open to the idea of sex and dating with somebody who belongs to a different political party by contrast women are much less open to it really and I think a big part of the explanation for that is that politics is more personal to women in a lot of ways especially when you talk about things like the me too movement and growing restrictions on women’s Reproductive Rights and Freedoms and so you know politically being with somebody who is different from you many women perceive that as a threat to women’s rights and so it’s something that can provoke fear or anxiety or or safety concerns by contrast for men many of them seem to find something uniquely arousing about the idea of being with somebody of a different party you know are some guys who actually even hire professional dominatrixes to engage in kinky political roleplay right there’s there’s something going on there yeah that’s interesting it’s maybe like a challenge to who you are or something that you find you’re taking on or you’re conquering almost and I think there’s also a taboo element to you know dating somebody who belongs to a different party and men are more turned on by taboos so I think there’s there’s some element to that that’s going on here as well interesting interesting so we end our podcast with some questions I ask everybody what’s something you know now that you wish you knew earlier well I think a good one would be don’t delay pleasure right because sometimes we put off doing the things that we really want to do and that would bring us pleasure because we feel like we have all these other things on our to-do list that we have to do first and when you start getting into that mindset and you keep delaying pleasure unfortunately sometimes it turns out that it’s too late for you to experience that I’ve seen that happen to too many people in my own life where they had all these dreams and hopes and things that they wanted to do with their life they delayed and then a health condition or or something else struck and then that suddenly they’ll never be able to do those things that they wanted to do so don’t delay pleasure life is short and that does not mean just sexual pleasure any pleasure of any kind so taking that vacation or doing that class you wanted to take to learn you know XYZ knitting or J Jitsu or dance or whatever you know do it do it cuz work’s always going to be there work is not going anywhere do you have a non-negotiable something you do every single day this is new this year but it’s to go to the gym almost every day so I’ve been going about six days a week sometimes I do actually go all seven um and I have to remind myself that I need to take like rest days from it but I found that it is very good for just my mental health and wellbeing it gets me out of the house gets me physically active and just not thinking about work for a while so it’s just it’s become an important part of my own self-care routine yeah I love going to the gym it’s like a little escape from everything you know just focus on what you’re doing and and uh and do it and sometimes it’s easier to you know do those things that you have to do if you just like take a break and go to the gym first because it just it provides this reset right that I think is really helpful yeah I mean you can only be productive for so long M um do you have a health hack outside of going to the gym or life hack that you want to share one of the most important things that I’ve learned is to say no we get asked to do lots of different things in our lives and sometimes too much is asked of us and lots of us want to please other people right we were trained to be people Pleasers and then we end up overc committing and we’re not happy that’s bad for our life our mental health and so forth and so learning to say no and to set boundaries is something that it’s hard to do but it’s an invaluable skill and I do say no to at least something every day because I just have to for the sake of my own health and well-being absolutely I mean no is a complete sentence it is and it means that you can say yes to the things that really matter so I think it’s a great one if you couldn’t be a psychologist sex researcher author what would you do with your life so my very first job when I I was in high school was I was hired as a teen film critic for our local newspaper in kanton Ohio aome that sounds really fun and so getting paid to go see movies was and then write snarky reviews about them was a lot of fun so if I couldn’t do any of the things that I’m doing now maybe I’d go back to being a film critic because that was a lot of fun that does sound really fun where can people find you my website is sexand psychology.com that’s where you can find my blog and podcast the podast is also available anywhere you listen to podcasts and my books 0.16 in terms of masturbation you’ve done a
.6 lot of work on this what are some of the
.4 health benefits of masturbation I mean
.759 there’s some people who accept it widely
.24 and there’s some people who think
.12 masturbation is just horrible should
.2 never be done but there are some health
.92 benefits so let’s review some of those
.48 yeah so masturbation can be healthy for
.359 us in many ways and if you look at the
.76 most common reasons people report for
.56 masturbating one of the biggest ones is
.4 stress and tension relief right so just
.119 as a form of self-care for you know
.48 dealing with or relieving stress in your
.399 life that can be one benefit we also see
.12 in the work that masturbation
.68 particularly to the point of orgasm can
.48 also help people sleep they fall asleep
.48 faster and they get better quality sleep
.76 when they masturbate before bed right
.32 and sleep is so important so vital to
.36 overall health and and function so
.92 that’s another benefit there’s also some
.84 work finding that men who ejaculate more
.399 frequently through both sex and
.48 masturbation have a lower risk of
.199 prostate cancer it it’s not cause and
.879 effect but there is that Association
.199 there so maybe it has some potential
.2 health benefits in that way there’s also
.119 some work finding that masturbation is
.159 linked to higher self-esteem in women
.479 and I think that can be explained in
.2 part by masturbation helping you to
.0 better understand your own body and what
.799 it is that brings you pleasure and that
.64 can make you more sexually confident as
.479 an individual and then there’s also some
.52 new research that we conducted at the
.479 Kinsey Institute this year in
.079 conjunction with the sexual Wellness
.64 brand womanizer where we looked at the
.119 role of masturbation in menopause
.84 symptom relief and what we found was
.399 that in a sample of menopausal women
.119 that masturbation was reported as one of
.36 the most effective techniques for
.92 reducing a wide range of menopause
.04 symptoms and it makes sense because
.84 masturbation can help you to sleep
.6 better right and so that might help in
.119 dealing with certain menopausal symptoms
.759 but also it was linked to women
.6 reporting less vaginal rophy as well so
.92 there’s also some data and other
.759 research finding that women who
.439 masturbate more who are in menopause
.439 show less vaginal atrophy over time and
.16 so there can be lots of potential health
.879 benefits there across the lifespan in
.08 terms of engaging in masturbation there
.84 was a lot of blowback from that
.8 article and I think that the important
.519 take-home is there could be benefits
.04 we’re not saying you shouldn’t get
.48 treatment for menopause in terms of
.48 hormone therapy but absolutely if you
.08 enjoy masturbation it could be a good
.2 tool to help you sleep better get more
.44 blood flow to the region and help
.4 overall in a multitude of ways I think
.4 that’s the key with masturbation or
.0 self-pleasure in general is that it
.12 could be used for a lot of disease
.239 conditions right to help with pain to
.519 help with a lot of different things but
.48 people tend to get very fixated on the
.599 morality of masturbation when and also
.48 how difficult it is to get funding I
.959 mean you guys are obviously very good at
.0 that but it is very difficult to get
.04 like funding to say hey I want to test
.84 if masturbation helps you know PCO s or
.44 or whatever the condition is you’re not
.36 going to get government funding to to do
.28 a study like that but when it comes to
.159 you know masturbation and its health
.48 benefits it can be used in conjunction
.48 with lots of other things in your life
.04 we’re not saying that masturbation is
.159 the only strategy you should use for
.64 improving your health but if you’re
.2 talking about menopausal women you can
.84 use masturbation in conjunction with
.519 hormone therapy it’s not a it’s not an
.959 either or phenomenon I just think it’s a
.64 useful tool that we can use as a form of
.599 self-care that might also have some
.4 health benefits and I realize
.159 masturbation may not be something that
.239 everybody is open to doing and you know
.76 there are various reasons why people
.319 might not be open to it and also for
.519 some people masturbation might not be as
.36 accessible you know as you get older
.08 sometimes chronic health issues
.08 disabilities can make it harder to
.599 engage in masturbation certain sex toys
.76 can become harder to operate and things
.439 like that so yeah there can certainly be
.76 challenges sometimes in terms of
.36 accessing the potential benefits of
.159 self-pleasure yeah there is however sex
.799 furniture that you can get that can help
.159 you if particularly if you’re older I’ve
.959 made a video on this I think it’s like
.239 sex after 60 but basically like you can
.36 buy certain things to help you get
.2 certain positions be able to even like
.92 we we actually have things for
.599 catheterizing so when women cize to open
.44 up the labia so you could use those you
.639 know there’s a whole host of things that
.16 you can do to help yourself if you want
.959 to right and I think that that’s you
.919 know that’s just for people who may be
.56 curious that you know if you can’t get
.12 certain positions because you have
.44 arthritis or it’s difficult or holding
.24 yourself up or whatever you know
.72 whatever position you normally do is no
.24 longer attainable to you there are ways
.52 to help yourself with that and you know
.52 that’s one of the keys to maintaining a
.36 satisfying sex life throughout your
.479 entire life is to get a little bit
.84 creative and to try some new things and
.72 sometimes the answer is buying sex
.6 Furniture you know the single most
.639 common complaint that seniors report
.32 when it comes to sex is that the old
.16 ways don’t work anymore and so you need
.84 to find new ways because your body Chang
.84 is what feels pleasurable to you changes
.039 what you desire what you fantasize about
.919 might change as well and so having an
.919 ability and openness to explore is
.12 really important but also expanding your
.08 definition of sex like sex isn’t just
.08 one thing it’s not just penetration and
.199 the older adults who are the most
.759 satisfied with their sex lives have the
.4 most expansive definition of sex they
.6 see sex as intimacy as opposed to sex as
.8 penetration yeah and apparently in the
.0 nursing homes there’s a lot of sex so
.24 and a lot of STI you know still use a
.84 condom or dental dam or something but
.68 yeah absolutely uh so you got to you got
.479 to figure out new ways new tricks so
.639 what are you working on right now that
.88 you’re excited about oh boy
.68 well I have a paper I’m working on right
.24 now that I think is really interesting
.56 it’s about people’s openness to dating
.6 and having sex with people who belong to
.72 different political parties than they do
.44 and I think it’s an important topic
.08 given that we live in this highly
.16 politically polarized time right how is
.52 this impacting the world of sex and
.639 dating and one of the interesting things
.72 I see in that research is that men
.479 regardless of their political background
.199 are much more open to the idea of sex
.0 and dating with somebody who belongs to
.84 a different political party by contrast
.88 women are much less open to it really
.24 and I think a big part of the
.319 explanation for that is that politics is
.72 more personal to women in a lot of ways
.96 especially when you talk about things
.8 like the me too movement and growing
.639 restrictions on women’s Reproductive
.479 Rights and Freedoms and so you know
.08 politically being with somebody who is
.24 different from you many women perceive
.919 that as a threat to women’s rights and
.56 so it’s something that can provoke fear
.16 or anxiety or or safety concerns by
.28 contrast for men many of them seem to
.8 find something uniquely arousing about
.639 the idea of being with somebody of a
.52 different party you know are some guys
.28 who actually even hire professional
.8 dominatrixes to engage in kinky
.919 political roleplay right there’s there’s
.52 something going on there yeah that’s
.16 interesting it’s maybe like a challenge
.879 to who you are or something that you
.72 find you’re taking on or you’re
.599 conquering almost and I think there’s
.96 also a taboo element to you know dating
.36 somebody who belongs to a different
.8 party and men are more turned on by
.879 taboos so I think there’s there’s some
.72 element to that that’s going on here as
.4 well interesting interesting so we end
.479 our podcast with some questions I ask
.039 everybody what’s something you know now
.56 that you wish you knew earlier well I
.479 think a good one would be don’t delay
.72 pleasure right because sometimes we put
.96 off doing the things that we really want
.28 to do and that would bring us pleasure
.599 because we feel like we have all these
.159 other things on our to-do list that we
.72 have to do first and when you start
.599 getting into that mindset and you keep
.12 delaying pleasure unfortunately
.56 sometimes it turns out that it’s too
.84 late for you to experience that I’ve
.879 seen that happen to too many people in
.12 my own life where they had all these
.24 dreams and hopes and things that they
.639 wanted to do with their life they
.599 delayed and then a health condition or
.44 or something else struck and then that
.4 suddenly they’ll never be able to do
.759 those things that they wanted to do so
.879 don’t delay pleasure life is short and
.96 that does not mean just sexual pleasure
.039 any pleasure of any kind so taking that
.159 vacation or doing that class you wanted
.039 to take to learn you know XYZ knitting
.0 or J Jitsu or dance or whatever you know
.96 do it do it cuz work’s always going to
.08 be there work is not going
.76 anywhere do you have a non-negotiable
.399 something you do every single day this
.24 is new this year but it’s to go to the
.64 gym almost every day so I’ve been going
.519 about six days a week sometimes I do
.48 actually go all seven um and I have to
.64 remind myself that I need to take like
.56 rest days from it but I found that it is
.519 very good for just my mental health and
.04 wellbeing it gets me out of the house
.24 gets me physically active and just not
.519 thinking about work for a while so it’s
.76 just it’s become an important part of my
.079 own self-care routine yeah I love going
.8 to the gym it’s like a little escape
.839 from everything you know just focus on
.56 what you’re doing and and uh and do it
.32 and sometimes it’s easier to you know do
.959 those things that you have to do if you
.68 just like take a break and go to the gym
.12 first because it just it provides this
.2 reset right that I think is really
.92 helpful yeah I mean you can only be
.44 productive for so long M um do you have
.56 a health hack outside of going to the
.32 gym or life hack that you want to share
.079 one of the most important things that
.6 I’ve learned is to say no we get asked
.6 to do lots of different things in our
.16 lives and sometimes too much is asked of
.48 us and lots of us want to please other
.399 people right we were trained to be
.72 people Pleasers and then we end up overc
.44 committing and we’re not happy that’s
.32 bad for our life our mental health and
.6 so forth and so learning to say no and
.2 to set boundaries is something that it’s
.959 hard to do but it’s an invaluable skill
.72 and I do say no to at least something
.04 every day because I just have to for the
.16 sake of my own health and well-being
.839 absolutely I mean no is a complete
.36 sentence it is and it means that you can
.2 say yes to the things that really matter
.0 so I think it’s a great one if you
.8 couldn’t be a psychologist sex
.839 researcher author what would you do with
.72 your life so my very first job when I I
.399 was in high school was I was hired as a
.079 teen film critic for our local newspaper
.519 in kanton Ohio aome that sounds really
.16 fun and so getting paid to go see movies
.839 was and then write snarky reviews about
.079 them was a lot of fun so if I couldn’t
.76 do any of the things that I’m doing now
.48 maybe I’d go back to being a film critic
.24 because that was a lot of fun that does
.04 sound really fun where can people find
